ROYALS | Every Time Meghan Markle Has Broken Royal Protocol

Since joining the British Royal family on May 19 when she wed Prince Harry at St. George’s Capital, Windsor Castle, Meghan Markle has had to adhere to a number a new rules and learn the many royal protocols that have been in place for countless years. For example, she must wear weights in her dress hems, fats to all formal occasion, have a black outfit packed at all times, must wear stockings or tights under dresses and skirts, cannot take her coat off in public and cannot expose her cleavage – however, how many of these protocols has she been caught breaking? Didn’t Wear Pantyhose At Her Engagement Announcement

Markle was criticized for not adhering to the custom of wearing pantyhose under dresses and skirts in public after she stepped out at Kensington Palace for the announcement of her engagement to Prince Harry in November, 2017, with bare legs

Styles Her Hair Loosely

The women of the royal family are expected to have tight and polished hairstyles at all times however Markle has stayed true to herself and continued to wear her hair styled in her signature messy bun, and even went as far as to style it in a ponytail for the christening of Prince Louis.

Shares Her Views On Abortion

Although royals are not permitted to make statements about anything political, Irish Senator Catherine Noone tweeted that Meghan reportedly expressed her support for a woman’s legal right to effect to have an abortion when attending a garden party at the British ambassador’s residence in Dublin in July.

Wore An Off-The-Shoulder Dress

Markle received criticism for wearing a dress with an off-the-shoulder neckline at her royal balcony debut for the Trooping the Colour ceremony. According to The Sun, the women of the royal family are not to ‘wear off-shoulder or other more revealing styles’.

Crossed Her Legs

The Duchess mistakenly crossed her legs at the Queen’s Young Leaders Awards Ceremony in June, instead of positioning them in what is known as ‘the Duchess slant’. In the video that surfaced, Markle is seen attempting to correct the position of her legs, tilting them while still crossed in an effort to rectify the error. She has since gone on to continue to place her legs in this particular iteration of the Duchess slant on multiple occasions.

Was Previously Married

As Markle has previously been married to American film director Trevor Engelson from 2011 until 2013, she required Queen Elizabeth II’s permission to marry into the royal family.

Took A Hat To Wimbledon

Markle broke royal protocol once again when she brought a Maison Michel straw hat along to her first Wimbledon appearance in July, however she wasn’t seen wearing it due to the fact that, according to The Sun, fats are not permitted in the Royal Box as they obstruct the views of others.

Spoke Out About The Time’s Up Movement

Markle made headlines once again when she spoke of the Time’s Up movement while on a panel at The Royal Foundation alongside Prince Harry, Prince William and Kate Middleton. Although not permitted to make a statement about anything political,  Markle shared her opinion on female empowerment, saying ‘I hear a lot of people speaking about girls’ empowerment and women’s empowerment – you will hear people saying they are helping women find their voices’. She continued, ‘I fundamentally disagree with that because women don’t need to find their voices, they need to be empowerment to use it and people need to be urged to listen’.

Gave A Speech At Her Own Wedding

As wedding speeches are customarily reserved for the groom, the best man, and the father of the bride, Markle broke tradition when she reportedly gave a heartfelt speech at her own reception. ‘She spoke about their first date and falling in love at first sight’, a source told The Sun. ‘Meghan said she knew she had met her prince from the off and how blessed and lucky she feels to have found such a profound love’.

Made A Statement Prior To Her Weeding

It is extremely rare for royal to make statements via Kensington Palace and almost unheard of for those that are yet to marry into the family to do so – therefore Meghan surprised many when she released a statement regarding the fact her father would not be able to walk her down the aisle. She broke further tradition when she chose to walk herself down the nave of St. George’s Chapel before being joined by Charles, The Prince of Wales, at the quire.

Public Displays Of Affection

Public displays of affection are frowned upon within the royal family, which explains why you don’t see Prince William and Kate Middleton embracing. Prince Harry and Markle on the other hand, have broken that rule and held hands in public on multiple occasions including at the 2018 Royal Ascot.

Chose A Non-British Wedding Dress Designer

Markle become the first British royal bride to wear a wedding dress designed by a non-British designer when she walked down the aisle in a Clare Waight Keller for Givenchy gown. However, while Givenchy is a French fashion house, Keller is in fact British.

Wore A Darker Shade Of Nail Polish

Although royal protocol only allows members of the royal family  to wear natural or pale shades on their maincured nails, Markle made headlines when she opted dor an ever-so-slightly darker shade of powder pink on a visit to the Nelson Mandela Centenary Exhibit at London’s Southerbank Centre in June.

Hugged A Stranger

Markle has broken royal protocol by giving children hugs on multiple occasions including 10-year-old Shophia Richard – who dreams of becoming an actress – during a visit to the Millennium Point building for an event celebrating International Women’s Day.

Wore A Cross Body Bag

Megan Markle was accused of breaking protocol when she wore a cross body bag instead of holding a clutch in early 2018. Believe it or not, the royals do not priorities mobility and comfort. According to protocol, holding a clutch re-affirms the fact that they are not to engage in handshakes with just anybody. As a result, wearing a cross body bag can be seen to invite a shake of the hand.

Wore Wedges

In October, Meghan Markle wore wedge when visiting Sydney’s Bondi Beach on her first royal through Australia, Fiji, Tonga and New.
