When Rihanna launched Fenty Beauty in 2017, the brand was taking one approach: more. There were more foundation shades for all (now over 40), more innovative color products and packaging, and more diversity and inclusion in the brand’s visuals and social media presence. Her new skincare line Fenty Skin – available on July 31 – is not launching with 40 products, but instead just three. Rihanna wants to prove that you can do more with less, at least when it comes to skincare.
‘Fenty Skin is everything I wish I had back then’, says the mogul in a press release. ‘I wanted it to feel approachable, easy, and to take the pressure off choosing a routine, so I created one for everyone’.
The ‘New Culture of Skin’ is made up of three products: Total Cleans’r Remove-It-All Cleanser, Fat Water Pore – Rfining Toner Serum and Hydra Vizor Invisible Moisturizer Broad Spectrum SPF 30. All are cruelty-free, vegan, oil-free, and eco-conscious. The products are simple and straightforward, made for anyone with skin of any color. After testing the products for over a month, we would agree that anyone can use and love Fenty Skin, but sensitive or acne-prone skin should integrate the products with a little caution.
The packaging is the first genius thing you’ll notice about Fenty Skin. The twist-open and twist-close cap makes quick work of your skincare routine, and the streamlines packaging means the products use less plastic overall. The Fenty Skin line isn’t exactly sustainable, but it’s definitely eco-conscious. The bottles are made using PCR and can be recycled.
Total Cleans’r Remove-It-All Cleanser
The cleanser has surprisingly emerged as our favorite of the trio. It’s a thick gel-cream formula, and a little goes a long way to remove all signs of sunscreen and makeup. The fruity scent, while confirmed to be natural, can be overwhelming. All three products have the same level of fragrance, so keep that in mind if you’re not a fan of fruity skincare or have sensitive skin.
Fat Water Pore-Refining Toner Serum
Fat Water is by far the most interesting and innovative product in the line. As the name suggest, it’s a thick-as-jelly serum and toner in one. The unique texture ensures it won’t fall through your fingers as you apply it on your skin, so you won’t waste any product. ‘Fat Water does it all – it makes pores and dark spots less visible, brightnes, smooths, fights shine – all without stripping skin’, she says in the release. ‘It’s everything for everyone. I’m obsessed with it.’ Fat Water is made with a blend of antioxidants, vitamin c, which hazel, niacinamide, and other plant ingredients to gently brighten and refine skin. It’s not going to plump or dramatically hydrate, as witch hazel is an astringent, so you will want to chase it with moisturizer.
Hydra Vizor Invisible Moisturizer Broad Spectrum SPF 30
Speaking of moisturizer, there’s the Hysra Vizor Invisible Moisturizer Broad Spectrum SPF. It’s a lightweight moisturizer – sunscreen hybrid that is refillable. The fruit scent sticks around after application. ‘I wanted to create a moisturizer with SPF that was totally invisible – that means no chalky residue and no flashback’, she says in the release. ‘We created this pink hue that works on all skin tones allowing it to blend in effortlessly and leave a healthy glow skin’. The formula does not contain oxybenzone or octinoxate – two UV filters that have been banned for their impact on ocean coral bleaching – but it does contain two other chemical filters to ensure the SPF is invisible. It’s worth keepin in mind that those with sensitive or reactive skin might struggle with the inclusion of the chemical sunscreen. This moisturizer is poised to be a hit for daytime, but you will still want to choose a different moisturizer without SPF for four nighttime routine. We imagine Fenty Skin is already working on something.
‘Skincare, it’s the truth. It either works or it doesn’t. There’s nowhere to hide’, Rihanna told British – Vogue earlier this year. The interview also notes that Rihanna is focusing on achieving the same level of perfection and quality with Fenty Skin as she did with Fenty Beauty.
Rihanna has been working on Fenty Skin as far back as March of last year, when she filed a trademark with the United States Patent and Trademark Office. The Fenty Skin trademark covers ‘medicated and non-medicated skincare, soap, body care and personal care products (excluding color cosmetics, perfume and other fragrance – only products), and related accessories such as kits, tools and applicators.
In the same British Vogue interview, Rihanna admitted that she has complete control over everything Fenty Beauty release – from the shade names to the marketing copy’. ‘Oh yeah! I write all of the copy for the websites, the product descriptions, product names, the color names…’ she said. ‘I do have a huge team, but I just don’t necessarily think their tone is mine. I’d feel like a fraud selling something that I can’t stand by’.
