The Maldivian Government has appointed the human rights lawyer to seek justice for the persecution of Rohingya Muslims in Myanmar
The Maldivian government has joined hands with the primarily Muslim African state of Gambia to seek justice for Myanmar’s 2017 persecution of Rohingya Muslims and have appointed prominent human rights lawyer Amal Clooney to fight for their cause.
Myanmar’s 2017 military crackdown caused around 740,000 Rohingya Muslims to fee to neighboring Bangladesh in an attempt to survive the ongoing genocide. Amal, considered one of the world’s most accomplished human rights lawyer, will be fighting for justice for the thousands of Rohingya Muslims who are suspected to have been killed in 2017 at the UN’s highest court.
‘I am delighted to have been asked to represent the Maldives before the International Court of Justice. Accountability for genocide in Myanmar is long overdue and I look forward to working on this important effort to seek judicial remedies for Rohingya survivors’, said the British – Lebanese lawyer.
Amal appointment comes following the International Court of Justice’s decision last month which ordered Myanmar to implement emergency measures to protect its Rohingya community who have been described by the UN as ‘the world’s most persecuted people’.
This will be the second time that Amal will be working with the Maldivian government. The lawyer successfully represented for Maldives president, Mohamed Nasheed and successfully secured a UN ruling that his 12-year jailing in 2015 was illegal.
