Is Michelle Obama stepping into Esther Perel’s shoes? The former first lady’s newly announced Spotify podcast – which will feature weekly conversation with Valerie Jarrett, Michele Norris, Conan O’Brien, and other renowned figures about the relationship that have shaped them – suggests as much.
Of course, Obama’s podcast likely won’t get into the nitty-gritty or romantic relationship to the extent that Pele’s does (in other words, don’t expect to find juicy details about her marriage to Barack). A promo video indicated the The Michelle Obama Podcast will chronicle ‘the challenges and the joys of being parent or a spouse, the friendship that help us through the toughest times, or the growth we experience when we lean on the colleagues and mentors around us’. Still, there’s a whole lot to learn there!
Obama’s mother, Marian Robinson, and brother, Craig Robinson, will participate in the podcast, which is set to premiere on Spotify on 29 July. ‘My hope is that this series can be a place to explore meaningful topics together and sort through so many of the questions we’re all trying to answer in our lives’, Obama said in a statement, adding. ‘Perhaps most of all, I hope this podcast will help listeners open up new conversations – and hard conversations – with the people who matter most to them. That’s how we can build more understanding and empathy for one another’.
