In a historic move, the Louvre, the world’s most-visited museum, is showcasing haute couture gowns and accessories from iconic fashion houses such as Chanel, Saint Laurent, and Dior alongside its renowned decorative arts collections. This unprecedented exhibition bridges the gap between fashion and history, celebrating the enduring relationship in between Parisian couture and the city’s cultural heart.
“Paris is the capital of fashion – there is a very strong relationship between the fashion houses and Paris, and the Louvre is the heart of Paris”, said Olivier Gabet, director of the museum’s decorative arts department, at the opening of the exhibition. For the first time, the museum is bringing high fashion into its galleries, creating a dialogue between contemporary design and historical art.
The exhibition juxtaposes modern masterpieces with artifacts from Ancient Greece to France’s Second Empire, inviting visitors to see the collections in a new light. A silk ball gown by John Galliano for Dior, designed in 2006, takes center stage in a room dedicated to Louis XIV, surrounded by gilded furniture and towering portraits of the Sun King.
In another gallery, Alexander McQueen’s iconic Armadillo platforms shoes from 2011 are displayed next to a 17th-century plate adorned with aquatic motifs, creating a striking contrast that highlights the timeless artistry of both eras.
Fashion designers have long drawn inspiration from the Louvre’s collections. Visionaries like Yves Saint Laurent, Karl Lagerfeld, and Hubert de Givenchy have acknowledged the museum’s influence on their work, and fashion house have used the Louvre’s grounds for runway shows. However, this marks the first time the museum has integrated haute couture into its exhibitions.
“The idea of this kind of exhibition is to say, “come to Louvre, look at the collections differently”, Gabet explained. The exhibition not only honors the craftsmanship of modern fashion but also underscores its place within the broader narrative of art and culture.
This groundbreaking exhibition reaffirms Paris as the global capital of fashion, blending history with innovation and offering visitors an unparalleled cultural experience. For fashion enthusiasts and art lovers alike, the Louvre’s latest initiative is a testament to enduring power of creativity across centuries.
