5 Easy Ways To Feel Great During The Party Season
Head into it as you plan to come out of it: healthy and energized. Liz Hambleton explains how to supercharge your system now and feel your best come January.
Boost your Immune System
Immunity is the holy grail of personal health; if you get a handle on it, you’ll sail through party season. “Gut health is key”, explains performance coach and nutritional expert Dalton Wong. “If it’s compromised by stress, poor diet or inflammation, many of the important microbes and good bacteria that live in your gut can be badly affected”.
This can lead to inflammation in the body and in turn, illness. “Replenish the good bacteria in your gut and help to kill off the body by loading up on pre- and probiotics; it’s vital to have both types, as each aids the production of a different type of bacteria”, says Wong.
Look Good To Feel Good
Sleep-deprived skin n can be a by-product during party season, but don’t wait for it to catch up with you in the morning. Take a more proactive approach by applying an overnight tanning product to infuse the skin with a luminous, golden glow. You may feel as though you’ve only had an hour’s sleep, but your colleagues will never know.
Pick Up A Protein Shake
Amping up your nutritional intake will help your body cope with a particularly demanding work/life schedule. But you don’t need to increase your portion size or pack extra snacks into your meal plan – all you need to do is add a strategic protein shake to your day.
“There’s more to protein shakes than people think”, explains Wong. “Yes, they help the muscles recover and grow after a workout, but they also refuel the body and supercharge energy levels”. If you’re heading straight out after a long day at work, Wong recommends having a shake about an hour before you leave. “It will give your body the boost it needs to get through the evening and help to avoid that exhausted feeling the next morning.” Oh, and it’s an excellent way to line your stomach, too.
Take A Sensory Shower
‘Essential oils make a significant difference at this time of year because they work on a physical and emotional level”, says aromatherapist and acupuncturist Annee de Mamiel. “An aroma triggers a response that can improve your general state of health and wellbeing”. She prescribes using them in almost medicinal way to invigorate the senses, wake up a tired body or soothe a wired mind. “Sprinkle a few drops of essential oils into your morning shower or evening bath and pause, breathe and reset”.
Pre-Empt A Bad Night’s Sleep
It’s estimated that up to a third of us suffer from insomnia. So if you’re looking for a way to improve your sleep, or you’re feeling wired but tired after a late-night party, magnesium could be the perfect pill free-solution. Absorption of magnesium is best through the skin so try soaking in a bath filled with Epson Salt an hour before bed for the deepest sleep. And because absorption through the skin is just as beneficial as taking an oral supplement, you could also try spritzing magnesium oil onto the soles of your feet, which is supposed to be the best place for the quickest absorption
