“When someone we love has cancer, we are all affected – husbands, wives, mothers and fathers, sisters, brothers, and friends. This our effort in the fight against cancer”. – Ralph Lauren.
It was in 1989, when designer Ralph Lauren decided to make philanthropic efforts to improve the care of cancer after his close friend and fashion editor of Washington Post was diagnosed with breast cancer. The young designer cofounded the Nina Hyde Center for Breast Cancer Research at the Georgetown Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Research to create more awareness and to improve care for this disease. This was just the beginning. Determined to make a change, he led the fashion industry in its support for breast cancer research in 1994 and designed the first logo for the Fashion Targets Breast Cancer initiative by the Council of Fashion Designers of America.
And in 2000, he founded the Pink Pony Campaign, a global initiative in the fight against cancer by the Ralph Lauren Corporation. The campaign works to ensure quality care, supporting programs that help guide patients through each stage in the entire process, from screening and diagnosis to treatment and of course, recovery. Not only this, the Ralph Lauren Center for Cancer Care in Harlem was founded in 2003 and works to provide every single person with treatment for the disease regardless of their ability to pay.
October is Breast Cancer Awareness month and this year, Ralph Lauren launched their “Together in Pink” campaign in support of the Pink Pony initiative. To commence a global conversation about the disease. Through the campaign, there will be different podcast that will feature survivors, as they share their personal journey with a family member, friend or fellow survivor.
The campaign this year feature Grammy-winning artist and cancer survivor Sherly Crow, Emmy Award-winning writer and speaker Suleika Jaouad, five – time Olympicgold medalist Nathan Adrian, and cancer fighters Tammy Walker and Mimi Arqueta as they take us through their battle to survive and thrive, in the podcast series.
Alongside the podcast series, 2019’s Pink Pony Collection features an array of the label’s classic styles with fresh graphics and details for men, women and children. To raise funds to provide quality care for patients, 100 percent of from the sale of all other items pink “Live Love” graphic T-shirt and 25 percent of from the sale of all other items in the Pink Pony Collection will be donated to the Pink Pony Fund of The Polo Ralph Lauren Foundation, or to an international network of cancer charities.
Moreover, to support the cause, flagship stores of Ralph Lauren in New York City, Beverly Hills, Chicago, Shanghai, London and Paris will be illuminated in pink.
